Ottawa Hockey Club rosters by season, 1884-1934

For inclusion on these rosters, at least one game had to be played during a season, whether it be tournament, scheduled, playoff, or exhibition. Some players are identified only by their last name and as they appear in Club records. For financial reasons the Club suspended play for the 1931-32 season.

Ottawa Stanley Cup winning years

Formed in 1883, the original Ottawa Senators were the first hockey club in Ontario and a founding member of the National Hockey Association and its successor, the National Hockey League. While known mostly as the Senators, the team was also dubbed the Ottawas and the Silver Seven at various times in its history.

The Stanley Cup was donated by Canada’s Governor General Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892 as a “challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion”. On May 15, 1893 it was awarded to its first recipient, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association.

Before relocating to St. Louis in 1934, Ottawa was the most successful squad in the early decades of organized hockey, capturing the prized trophy 9 times in the span of a quarter century*:

1903, 1904, 1905

1909, 1911

1920, 1921, 1923

1927

*While Ottawa captured the Stanley Cup an impressive 9 times, they also successfully defended several challenges in the same season and twice they both defended and then lost the Cup in the same year; 1906 and 1910.

Where they played

The Ottawa Hockey Club/Ottawa Senators had an association with seven different rinks in Ottawa between 1883 and 1934.

1. The Royal Rink: Located on Slater Street just east of Elgin, it was here that the Ottawa Hockey Club held its first ever practice on March 6, 1883. Other than a few so-called friendly matches against local players, the Club never played a competitive game at the Royal.

2. Dey’s Skating Rink: Located on the east side of the Rideau Canal near where the Laurier Bridge now stands. The Ottawa Hockey Club used the rink as the centre of its operations until 1890.

3. Rideau Rink: Located at Theodore Street (now Laurier Avenue) and Waller Street in Sandy Hill. The Ottawa Hockey Club played here until 1897.

4. Dey’s Rink: Located at Ann Street, now Gladstone Avenue, and Bay Street. The club played its first game here in January of 1897 and its last in 1907.

5. Aberdeen Pavilion: Located at Lansdowne Park, the Aberdeen Pavilion was an exhibition hall that was converted in the winter for skating and hockey. It was used only occasionally, most notably to defend against four separate Stanley Cup challengers in 1904.

6. Dey’s Arena: Located on the north side of Laurier Avenue West opposite the Cartier Square Drill Hall in the centre of the city. The Senators played their first game here on January 11,1908 and their last on March 10, 1923.

7. Ottawa Auditorium: Located at the corner of O’Connor Street and Argyle Avenue in Centretown. The team played here from the Fall of 1923 to March of 1934.
