Anatomy of a Season: 1890-91

Posted on August 29, 2025August 31, 2025 by admin

Adapted from Chapter 4

The 1890-91 season was by far the most ambitious yet in the short history of the Ottawa Hockey Club, which one year earlier had come under the wing of the new Ottawa Amateur Athletic Club. With this solid organizational base, the Hockey Club inspired the formation of the first Ottawa city league, joined in the move to create an Ontario league, and returned to competition in the challenge series of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. Organizational stability no doubt helped the team on the ice. The Club won 13 matches and lost only one, outscoring their opponents 56-11.

The players, all amateurs, had jobs or were students; but they found time to commit themselves to a demanding hockey season. Here is a day-by-day reconstruction of the team’s 1890-91 activities beginning with the organizational meeting and concluding with a sitting for the team portrait at season’s end. Note the time dedicated to practicing.

The on-ice numbers were impressive; the off-ice financial figures were not, showing a deficit of $70 on receipts of $51 and expenditures of $121. The difficulty was the rental agreement with the Rideau Rink. It called for the Club to pay, in addition to a flat twenty dollars for the season, half of the gross proceeds from games. But the Club’s expenses in putting the games on, principally guarantees to visiting teams, resulted in a net loss on matches. Added to the problem was the common practice at that time for rink operators to sell season tickets entitling holders to free entry for skating, hockey and other events held in the premises. This meant lost gate potential for the Hockey Club, since it received no share from the rink’s season ticket revenues.  While the team secured $51.00 in grants and subscriptions from the OAAC, it incurred expenses of $121.00.
